CEF is pleased to honor graduating seniors who make a difference in the areas of community service and music. Two CHS students have been awarded $1,000 each to help further their college education.
In the area of community service, CEF awarded its Teddie Warner Community Outreach Scholarship to Alexis Arnold. Ms. Arnold stated that “volunteering is a way to find yourself - what you can do best; what qualities you may need to improve upon and how you are able to assist those who lack in what you find abundant.” Ms. Arnold proved this point by dedicating over 400 hours to Pomona Valley Hospital. In addition, she gave significant time to her church, organizing events and fundraisers and teaching Sunday School. She also participated in the Soul Food Christian Club at CHS, the Sick Baby Fund and the Million Dollar Pledge to build an addition to Pomona Valley Hospital. CEF is proud to honor this remarkable young woman and wishes her well as she continues her academic career at UCLA.
Patrick Bernal is the recipient of the David Rose Instrumental Music Scholarship. Patrick began playing the trumpet through the elementary music program. He has been dedicated to instrumental music for the past nine years through the district. At CHS, Patrick has been a drum major and section leader, as well as principal trumpet for the orchestra and concert band for three years. In his spare time, Patrick organized his own jazz combo called “The Jazz Brigade”. Rick Melanson, CHS Jazz Band Director told CEF that “Patrick is, without a doubt, the hardest working student I have experienced. He not only works hard developing his music skills, but is always willing to help set up for concerts, load equipment or any other task that needs to be completed.” CEF is happy to honor Patrick and his dedication to music. We wish him well as he continues his education at Berkeley.
